Museo Casa Kahlo Welcomes 100,000 Visitors in its First Year
The Kahlo family has celebrated the first anniversary of Museo Casa Kahlo in Coyoacán, Mexico City, which has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors since opening one year ago.
Museo Casa Kahlo is an intimate museum in Coyoacán, Mexico City, showcasing aspects of Frida Kahlo’s private life and family.
Opened in September 2025, the museum occupies Casa Roja (The Red House), a brick home that once belonged to Frida’s sister, Cristina. Just blocks from Frida’s famous Museo Frida Kahlo (Casa Azul), Casa Roja served as a quiet, personal sanctuary where the artist could escape her turbulent public life with Diego Rivera. Visitors can see a recreation of her private studio with her materials and belongings, as well as a mural she painted in the kitchen.
During its inaugural year, Museo Casa Kahlo was named to TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026, Time Out’s 26 Best Things to Do in the World in 2026, and J.P. Morgan’s NextList 2026, recognizing distinctive new destinations and experiences in arts and culture. Half of the museum’s visitors come from Mexico and half from across the globe, underscoring its role in bringing Frida Kahlo’s private family life to audiences at home and abroad.
“When we opened our family home to the public, our goal was always to bring visitors from Mexico and from all over the world together to celebrate a part of Frida’s life that had gone unspoken too long,” said Mara Romeo Kahlo, Frida Kahlo’s grandniece and heir, representing the living legacy of the Kahlo family.
“To see 100,000 people walk through these rooms in our first year, and connect not only with Frida the artist, but with Frida as a daughter, sister, and member of this family, has been extraordinarily meaningful to us.”
As the museum begins its second year, it’s excited to share several new and growing projects with Fundación Kahlo, which is dedicated to preserving and celebrating Frida Kahlo’s legacy. Submissions for the new Kahlo Art Prize open this November. The prize will recognize an emerging Mexican artist with a $50,000 USD award and opportunities to showcase their work at the Museo. Affectionately known as Casa Roja, the museum began as a private home owned by the Kahlo family for generations. Today, its visual identity by Pentagram and restoration design by Mexico-based architect Mariana Doet Zepeda Orozco and David Rockwell of Rockwell Group create a welcoming setting for a roster of events celebrating and amplifying local Mexican culture.

Passed down through generations of Kahlo women, Casa Roja was entrusted to Frida’s grandniece, Mara Romeo, who lived in the house until 2023.
