Discover Authentic Aboriginal Experiences in Australia

Tourism Australia promotes ways for visitors to experience and learn about the First Nations community through unique Aboriginal experiences.

Vacationer Magazine appreciates when destination marketing organizations and tourism boards take the initiative to amplify underrepresented voices, and Tourism Australia is doing it! It just launched a new website dedicated to promoting the extraordinary Aboriginal-guided experiences offered around Australia that make up the Discover Aboriginal Experiences (DAE) Collective.

The new website brings together more than 160 experiences from over 45 businesses, all led by Aboriginal guides, together in one spot making it easier for users to search by the experience type, location, or duration. Meanwhile, it focuses on the DAE Collective’s mission to highlight tour operators that celebrate Australia’s contemporary and Indigenous heritage in a way that has a positive impact on the community, culture, and environment.

Bede Fennell, the Executive General Manager of Corporate Affairs for Tourism Australia, said the organization had an important role to play in promoting Aboriginal tourism experiences to travelers around the world.

“Our research across our key markets shows us the more we tell our Indigenous story and bring it to life the more interest there is amongst international travelers,” said, Fennell. “The Discover Aboriginal Experiences collective includes a wide variety of adventure, food, and urban experiences right across Australia that can be integrated into any itinerary.”

Nicole Mitchell, an Executive Officer for Discover Aboriginal Experiences, Nicole Mitchell said their promise to DAE members is to raise the profile of what they offer and that’s exactly what the new website will help facilitate.

“We want Aboriginal experiences to be an essential part of any trip to Australia where visitors engage with multiple tourism businesses to get a true sense of diversity of cultures and experiences. The best way to do that is to make what’s on offer easy to discover and understand,” said Mitchell. “Ultimately by helping people to find an experience that fits into their plans, we are also helping to drive a deeper connection and understanding of Aboriginal peoples and their cultures.”

LGBTQ+ travelers who enjoy exploring new cultures can dive into a wealth of travel experiences including a sunset river cruise to the Mandingalbay Yidinji Indigenous Protected Area; learn the fascinating stories behind ancient rock paintings on a guided walk to Akarroo Adnya; and see how native Australian ingredients and ancient food preparation techniques are used in modern cooking.
