Cuba’s Only LGBTQ+ Resort Welcomes International Travelers Again

MGM Gran Muthu Rainbow Hotel, Cuba’s only LGBTQ+ resort, is open for business after closing its doors in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country relaxed its restrictions in November 2021, and finally, international travelers can book their stay at this exclusive resort in Cayo Guillermo, Ciego de Ávila, Cuba.  There are queer-friendly properties on the island, but this hotel is specifically for LGBTQ+ guests.

Arrivals to the 5-star hotel are only allowed through the Jardines del Rey Airport, and guests will feel comfortable staying at this luxurious safe haven for queer guests. Decorated with rainbows and other colorful motifs, the hotel features 248 rooms that range from the 2,194 square-foot Junior Suite to the almost 70,000 square-foot Seaview Suite. A gym/fitness center, salon, Kids Club, and a game room are a few onsite amenities.

Guests can dine in their choice of six restaurants, including the buffet-style Food Orchard, Malabar Indian Spice, Spanish Tapas Restaurant, and Parrillada Ranchon, which serves authentic Cuban cuisine.  A snack bar, pool bar, and beach bar are also located on the premises.

And there’s no shortage of fun on and off-site activities to keep guests occupied. Active LGBTQ+ travelers can go horseback riding, scuba diving, kite surfing, fishing, or play a game of tennis.

The property is a partnership between the Muthu Hotels chain and the state-run Grupo Hotelero Gaviota. And with the success of the MGM Gran Muthu Rainbow, plans are underway to open a similar LGBTQ+ property in the country’s capital of Havana, according to OutTraveler.
