Queer Horror Comedy Set Aboard Cruise Ship to Debut on Hulu

Queer horror is gaining popularity in the world of television and filmmaking but I, for one, never anticipated seeing it combined with themes of travel. I thought the forthcoming Scare BNB from DIVABoxOffice.tv was a fluke but now seeing Hulu’s announcement about its new series, from the BBC, called Wreck,  I have to consider the real possibility that we have a new unexpected trend on our hands!

As reported by Queerty, Wreck premiered on BBC Three, the home to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, last fall, and come March 1 will be streaming in the US exclusively on Hulu. The show is considered a horror comedy and was written and created by out British screenwriter Ryan J Brown. The show stars Oscar Kennedy as Jamie, who takes a job aboard the cruise ship Sacramentum in order to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his sister, and soon after bodies start piling up at the hands of a duck-masked serial killer. (You read that correctly.)

On board, the ship is Jamie’s best friend Vivian played by Thaddea Graham. Both characters are queer, find romance during the course of the show, and were specifically designed by Brown to circumvent the harmful tropes that have plagued the horror genre when it comes to queer characters; which basically means that their queerness will not be used as an excuse to kill or vilify them.

Naturally, with the story set aboard a cruise ship, there is an eclectic cast of characters, just like in real life. And of course, the isolation of the open sea is a great way to boost the fear factor. All good things to keep in mind when you’re booking your next cruise!

The show received mixed reviews but ultimately, the BBC renewed it for a second season. Attitude and Gay Times also lists the show as one of the top LGBT shows of 2022.
