Adventure Travel Experts Share 4 Top Tips For Solo Female Travelers

Solo travel is experiencing a major moment. Across social media, TV, and travel trends, more women are seeking to explore the world on their own terms, and recent data indicates this momentum is only increasing.

Part of the cultural spotlight comes from Roku’s 2025 docuseries, Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross, which has just been renewed for a second season. Tracee explores destinations including Morocco, Mexico, and Spain while celebrating solo travel as an act of self-care and empowerment. Interest in the show is reflected in online search behavior. According to Google Trends, searches for “Tracee Ellis Ross solo travel” are currently experiencing a breakout surge, while searches for “Tracee Ellis Ross solo travel show” have risen by 4,700%, showing growing public interest in the concept of independent travel as a lifestyle and wellness choice.

Adventure tour operator Wild Frontiers also reports that 57% of all guests traveled solo in 2025, with women accounting for an overwhelming 73% of solo travelers on its group tours, which have a maximum of 12 travelers.

Over the past year, global searches for ‘solo female travel safety’ have increased by 1,050%, while ‘solo female travel tips’ have risen by 450% – highlighting a growing movement of women actively planning independent adventures.

Clare Tobin, CEO at Wild Frontiers, says: “We’re seeing a clear rise in women choosing to travel independently. For many, it’s about confidence and freedom – ticking off destinations that may not be on a partner’s or friend’s list. Small-group tours offer the perfect balance of independence, but with built-in support and a sense of community.

“Safety is often front of mind for solo female travelers, and traveling with experienced local guides allows women to explore more remote or culturally complex destinations with reassurance. It’s empowering – without feeling exposed.”

4 Top Tips for First-Time Solo Female Travelers

If you’re looking to book your first solo travel adventure, Clare shares her top tips on how to plan and prepare.

#1: Do your research

“Learn about local customs, laws, and cultural traditions before you travel. Social platforms like Instagram and TikTok can offer real-life perspectives, but it’s also important to check official government travel advice for the latest updates.”

#2: Choose the right travel insurance

Jonathan Frankham, General Manager, UK and Europe, at global travel insurance provider, World Nomads, says: “You should buy travel insurance as soon as you book the trip, as this can provide protection in case of any cancellations or delays in the run-up to your vacation. It also enables you to get the care you need, should you get sick or injured while you’re away.

“There are many kinds of travel insurance on the market, so make sure you choose the right option for your level of activity. Not all insurance will cover you for adventure-style activities such as water sports or climbing.”

#3: Embrace local experiences

“One of the most rewarding aspects of solo travel is meaningful connection. Join a cooking class, a textile workshop or a community-based experience. Stay in locally owned accommodation, dine in independent restaurants, and shop local – it’s the best way to truly connect with a destination.”

#4: Put smart safety measures in place

“Traveling solo can feel a little daunting at first, and it’s important to take precautions and prepare for your trip. Read recent accommodation reviews carefully and prioritize properties with secure locks and safes. Share your itinerary with someone at home and consider using a global eSIM so you can stay connected. Simple precautions allow you to relax and enjoy the experience.”
