Cheap Airfares Expected This Fall

After a stint of summer travel woes – from high gas prices to botched vacations due to delayed or canceled flights – travel experts say that roundtrip tickets will drop to lower than normal prices later this year. So, what does that mean? Queer travelers should plan their fall trips sooner rather than later to scoop up those cheap airfares.

“We have seen fares come down $100 per ticket in the last 6 to 8 weeks alone,” said Hayley Berg, lead economist at Hopper. “Fares this year remain higher than 2019 as demand surges and as jet fuel prices are about 80 to 100% higher than they were in 2019.”

Check this out! The average domestic roundtrip flight in May was an average of $400. In the fall, the average airfare is expected to be around $298. The same goes for average international roundtrip flights, which peaked in June at $1064, whereas in the fall, consumers could see it decrease to $757, according to Hopper.

So, if you’re looking to snag a deal this fall, here are a few tips before you buy:

  • Use an app to get notifications to help you monitor prices.
  • Travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday to save you some money.
  • Book your travel at least three weeks in advance.
  • Track prices two or three months ahead of your trip dates. You could save up to 30% more than travelers who start looking at the last minute.

And it’s never too early to start planning your warm-weather getaway in Miami or your Christmas markets tour in Europe. Yep, we said the “C” word. App notifications or Google alerts, for example, are especially helpful if you want to find cheap fares. However, you should be aware that airfare deals can pop up at any time. Travel experts recommend booking airfare for the holidays by mid-October.
