Halloween in Helsinki, Finland

Finland can sometimes be overlooked by its Nordic neighbors, though its 41 national parks, sauna culture (named to the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List), adventure activities, and Helsinki’s evolution into being a city of the people, have quickly made the country a favorite for some including LGBTQ+ travelers. Same-sex marriage, adoption, and surgery to change your gender are all legal in progressive Finland.

So, it’s cool if you want to be your authentic self and experience Halloween and the fall season, too!  Most visitors get a thrill from jumping into freezing waters before promptly running to a Finnish sauna, but now, there are even more adrenaline-pumping activities for visitors and locals to enjoy this Halloween and beyond. And even if you don’t make it to Helsinki to frolic during the spooky season, you can still add these fun things to do to your travel bucket list for next year.

Light a Candle on All Saints’ Day

Though traditions may vary, many countries like Finland observe All Saints’ Day. In Helsinki, many locals show great respect for this day and the remembrance of those who have passed. This year it will take place on Saturday, November 4. It’s not uncommon to pass a cemetery with thousands of burning candles, which is a vision to behold, especially after sunset.

Add the Hietaniemi Cemetery to your list of places to explore. Visitors can also go to the Church of Suomenlinna which houses a crypt in the basement. On All Saints’ Day, the Church of Suomenlinna is open and invites visitors to light a candle to celebrate the lives of lost loved ones.
