Trains Replace Short-Haul Flights in France

France is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint when it comes to how locals and visitors get around the country.  The government is banning short-haul flights to domestic locations that are accessible by train in two and a half hours or less.  

Yes, the travel time will be longer for passengers, but the short-haul travel via train will make it ecologically cleaner. So, what does that mean for travelers who want a quick getaway from Paris? Well, you should be aware that the new regulation will put an end to daily flights between Paris and regional hubs like Nantes, Lyon, and Bordeaux. 

Initially, the ban will only affect routes from Paris to Nantes, Paris to Lyon, and Paris to Bordeaux. Unfortunately, trains to other domestic locations are not as frequent. 

Approved by the European Commission, the new measure was first introduced in France’s 2021 Climate Law, after a citizen’s assembly was tasked with trying to come up with ways to reduce carbon emissions. The Union of. French Airports and airlines oppose the ban citing that it infringes on EU freedom of movement rights. 

Oddly enough the ban does not affect private flights, which account for more carbon per passenger than commercial routes.
