Stay at the Kissel Uptown for Oakland Black Pride

Celebrate Oakland Black Pride with the Kissel Uptown Oakland, the city’s newest upscale hotel!

The Kissel Uptown Oakland is the official sponsor for the Oakland Black Pride Festival with its week-long series of events (June 28 – July 2) centered on celebrating the many crucial contributions to the Gay Rights Movement made by Black activists. Events include the Black Queer Expo, Pride panels and workshops, the Black Pride Brunch, a gala, and more.

How to Join the Celebration:
  • High 5ive, the hotel’s lively rooftop bar & lounge, and whose name pays tribute to Glenn Burke the first, openly gay professional baseball player, is the first stop on the Queer Bar Crawl.
  • The hotel will also be hosting the Black Pride Sunday Brunch in the newly revamped, Otto’s Uptown Kitchen.

Last year, the Oakland Black Pride (OBP) Festival made history in the city of Oakland with the first Black-led Pride Festival during Pride Month. This summer, they’re back, blacker and gayer than ever!

The theme for this year’s 3-Day Black Pride Festival is “Happy Hereafter.” All of the events will be rooted in Black, Queer joy and wellness, carrying the message of “finding happiness from now on”, an important sentiment for us all to heed. In a time when not much is certain in the world, we know that Black, Queer joy is so very necessary, as it’s the thing that moves the needle.

OBP believes that Black communities are also LGBTQ+ communities and the intersectionality of the two is where we draw their inspiration. They’ve got some exciting things planned this June!

At Kissel Uptown Oakland, stay in the core of the city’s most vibrant district, Uptown, the center of an eclectic arts and entertainment scene. Their story and this new hotel honor the city’s past by celebrating a thriving city of the present. The restored and reimagined building embraces the neighborhood’s history and spirit with grand Beaux-Arts architecture—towering columns, locally-commissioned artworks, bold décor, and plentiful natural light.

Guests are steps away from entertainment, shopping, dining, and gathering spaces for the city’s ardent innovators, artists, and mavericks. We’re adjacent to the diverse restaurants and venues at The Hive, and a short walk from Art Deco landmarks like the Fox Theater.
