Celebrating Carnival in Malta

LGBTQ+-friendly, Malta celebrates its annual Il-Karnival ta’ Malta (Carnival) usually held during the last week in February. Due to the current Covid-19 measures, the annual event is still on – February 25 – March 1, 2022 – but scaled-down festivities.

In Valletta, Malta’s capital, various installations will be set up along the city’s streets, including a photographic exhibition of German photographer Frank Kirchner’s work, a costumes exhibition that features works from previous years, and a live production of Il-Qarċilla – all in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv. The historic Manoel Theatre will also produce a live theatrical show which includes dance and other activities for children.

“Festivals Malta takes pride in investing in local artists through various initiatives, such as the Carnival workshop held last summer and other initiatives such as the I.COM Project and much more,” said Norman Hamilton, chairman, Festivals Malta.

“Il-Karnival ta’ Malta is an important event in Malta’s cultural calendar and Festivals Malta’s mission is to preserve the traditions and customs associated with the Maltese Carnival, while also elevating it as a quality festival,” said Annabelle Stivala, CEO, Festivals Malta.

Il-Karnival ta’ Malta is organized by Festivals Malta, in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv and supported by Kinnie and Mapfre MSV Life.
