Americans, including Queer travelers, May Need a ‘Visa’ When Traveling to Europe in 2024

If you’re an American thinking about traveling to Europe next year, then listen up! In 2024, Americans – including LGBTQ+ folks with a U.S. passport – will have to fill out an online visa application before entering any country in the European Union.

That’s right! Queer travelers will need to have an approved visa in hand before jetting off to Sitges for Bear Week, Switzerland for Arosa Ski Week, or a leisurely vacation to explore Italy. So, Vacationer Magazine wanted to give you a heads-up even though the new system isn’t a done deal yet. The idea has been delayed before and is expected to be delayed again.

However, what you should know is that if it does go as planned, the EU, through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), will roll out the new requirement in January 2024. The visa application process may require a proposed online application fee of $8 per traveler. Similar to visa forms to enter other countries, the application will ask for basic information, travel plans, and history, along with other security questions.

Approval could take 10 minutes and as long as 96 for more complicated applications. Approved visas would last a traveler for three years or until their passport expired, whichever comes first.

Travel experts believe if the visa requirement goes through with the proposed application fee, it’s possible the U.S. could institute a visa charge for European travelers entering the United States.

Airlines would have to ensure passengers have an approved visa before boarding a plane. With the increase in Americans traveling to Europe this year, we can only imagine the travel snafu this may cause for uninformed travelers who may be denied boarding the plane.

Stay tuned! We’ll keep you updated on the proposed EU travel requirement.
