SNL Skit Spoofs Southwest Airlines’ Holiday Travel Fiasco

At Vacationer, we usually like to keep readers abreast of the most recent news that affects all travelers, like when Southwest Airlines canceled thousands of flights during the busy Christmas travel week. It’s a travel nightmare the FAA and the airline itself are trying to sort out.

A recent Saturday Night Live skit stars hottie actor Michael B. Jordan and other cast members, including Heidi Gardner and Devon Walker, who played faux Southwest employees.

Throwing shade on Southwest’s efforts in “making things right,” the skit pokes fun with a promise to upgrade the airline’s entire communication system to “2008 Dell Computers” and “saying bye-bye to the 2002 ThinkPad laptops with the little red nipple in the middle.” Later on in the fake ad, viewers learn that the old 2002 laptops will be used by FAA air traffic specialists to keep pilots updated – an upgrade from their “pen and paper method.”

The laughs don’t stop there. The skit continues with a promise of “no more missing baggage at baggage claims… guaranteed” and that “all luggage will be sorted by color,” making it the customer’s responsibility, not the airline’s issue.

“So if you’re going to Dallas, bring a red suitcase. Don’t show up with a blue bag. Blue bags go to Charlotte,” according to the actors in the skit. Customers will also be able to enjoy the new Southwest Premiere Lounge conveniently “located inside of an active Starbucks.”

In a final comical blow, the skit closes out by calling out airline passengers for purchasing a Southwest ticket, placing the blame firmly at the customer’s feet for booking with the airline.

Saturday Night Live gave us the travel levity and laughs that didn’t think we needed – and we’re here for it.  Check out the hilarious Southwest Airlines’ skit below!
