The Dunes Resort Celebrates 45 Years as the Midwest’s Premier LGBTQ+ Sanctuary

The Dunes Resort in Saugatuck, Michigan, has unveiled a new season, featuring historic pageants, high-energy summer tea dances, and an expansive calendar of events for the milestone year.

The Dunes Resort, one of the nation’s largest and oldest LGBTQ+ hospitality destinations, proudly announces its 45th anniversary season. Established in 1981, the resort has evolved from a modest motel into a vital cultural icon, serving as a pillar of queer joy and a sanctuary for travelers across the Midwest and beyond.

While many longstanding LGBTQ+ spaces across the country have disappeared, The Dunes stands as an enduring reflection of the Saugatuck/Douglas region’s inclusive reputation. The 2026 season is designed to honor this deep-dive heritage while inviting a new generation of travelers to experience the Art Coast of Lake Michigan with a schedule of can’t-miss entertainment and performers.

“Reaching 45 years is more than a milestone; it is a testament to the enduring power of queer spaces and the community that supports them,” says the resort’s management team. “We are committed to preserving this voice as a community icon, ensuring that The Dunes remains a rite of passage for LGBTQ+ travelers for another 45 years.”

Beyond events and themed weekends, The Dunes offers a comprehensive resort experience. Visitors have access to a sprawling pool and pool bar, the high-energy Main Bar, and a dedicated Cabaret stage for live performances. Accommodations range from rooms and suites to onsite cottages, providing a welcoming home base for exploring the vibrant shops and galleries of downtown Douglas and Saugatuck.

Michigan’s Art Coast

The resort serves as the gateway to the “Art Coast” of Michigan, an area widely recognized as the most LGBTQ-friendly small town in the Midwest. Visitors to the region can explore a vibrant community of LGBTQ-owned businesses, ranging from contemporary galleries like Amazwi to boutiques and cozy local eateries in the walkable downtown districts.

The region’s agricultural landscape has also emerged as a premier viticulture destination. Guests are increasingly drawn to local wineries, with Modales serving as a standout highlight. Known for its estate-grown, cool-climate varietals and a contemporary tasting room that welcomes all travelers, just minutes from the resort grounds.

Beyond the social scene, the destination is framed by the stunning natural backdrop of Oval Beach and the expansive Saugatuck Dunes State Park, providing a perfect balance of high-energy nightlife and serene relaxation. This commitment to inclusivity is deeply rooted in the area’s history, showcased at the Saugatuck-Douglas History Center, and continues to thrive today with The Dunes Resort serving as the central hub for the region’s legendary celebrations and year-round community gatherings.
