This Private Reserve in Zambia is Reintroducing Lions in a Vital Rewilding Initiative
Seeing wild lions from your base in a Zambian luxury reserve is a premier travel experience and offers the chance of exclusive encounters with these storied big cats in their more remote, wild habitats.
Now, Lolelunga Private Reserve, part of the Zambia Luxury Lodge Collection (ZLLC), has initiated the reintroduction of lions to its 30,000-hectare wilderness in northern Kafue, marking a pivotal step in the restoration of one of Zambia’s most important ecosystems. The translocation, completed on April 12 in partnership with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife and the Zambia Ministry of Tourism, brings lions back to a landscape where they disappeared over 15 years ago due to poaching and human-wildlife conflict.

This reintroduction is Zambia’s first-ever effort to rewild captive-bred lions. A seven-year-old male and female were translocated from Mukuni Big Five in Livingstone to Lolelunga, where they are now undergoing a carefully managed rehabilitation process designed to prepare them for life in the wild.
The initiative follows years of groundwork at Lolelunga, including the successful deployment of the reserve’s cheetah reintroduction program, introduced in 2024, and which has already demonstrated the viability of restoring apex predators to the region. Together, these efforts form part of a broader, long-term vision to rebuild a balanced ecosystem within the reserve’s diverse habitats along the Lunga River.
“Reintroducing lions to Lolelunga is both a conservation milestone and a deeply symbolic moment,” said Suhail Dudhia, Managing Director (ZLLC). “We hope this sets a precedent and inspires similar initiatives across the country, helping to secure a future for lions that might otherwise remain in captivity.”

Due to the reserve’s open river boundary with surrounding Game Management Areas, and its ecological proximity to Kafue National Park, genetic integrity was a critical consideration in the planning process. After evaluating potential translocation sources in Malawi, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, Lolelunga chose to partner with Mukuni Big Five, ensuring careful lineage control while advancing a bold new conservation model in Zambia.

The two lions are currently housed in a secure acclimatization enclosure, which is ten times larger than their previous habitat, where they are undergoing a structured six- to eight-week rewilding program. This process is overseen by a specialized team, including a wildlife veterinarian, a lion rewilding expert, and Lolelunga’s on-site management team. The program focuses on rebuilding natural hunting instincts, reducing human dependency, and preparing the animals for full release into the reserve.

Lolelunga Private Reserve has emerged as one of Zambia’s most ambitious conservation projects, combining rewilding, habitat restoration, and low-impact tourism to protect and regenerate a once-degraded landscape. Once the rewilding process is completed, the lions will be released into the wider Lolelunga ecosystem, where they will play a critical role in enhancing biodiversity across the reserve.
