These Cities Are Winning at Queer-Friendly Travel Right Now
Traveling to LGBTQ-friendly cities is essential for safety, comfort, and social and economic empowerment. If you’re going to take time off work and dip into your savings or credit, you want to make sure your trip is free from harassment and violence, and allows you to be your authentic self, within reason, of course.
According to a May 2026 report on the safest LGBTQ destinations, Portugal and Spain are the best places for a vacation, taking 4 of the top 10 spots. With tourist safety often influenced by equality and overall queer support, a new study by Hidden analyzed the most popular destinations across 6 continents, comparing them by safety, affordability, LGBTQ-related entertainment, and general vacation convenience.
Two Portuguese cities, Porto and Lisbon, lead the ranking, with comfortable weather, low costs, and high safety. Madrid, Spain, scores the highest for safety, allowing tourists to enjoy a vibrant nightlife that lasts until 4-6 AM. Paris offers the largest variety of LGBTQ+-friendly hotels, with 441 accommodations around the city.
To identify the best destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers, the study looked at the key factors that influence vacation quality, including safety, pricing, entertainment, and practical convenience, like nightlife, closing hours and summer climate.
For safety, the annual Gay Travel Index, overall safety index, and LGBTQ+ legislation status were considered, while entertainment ratings took into account general availability of bars, clubs, and events, as well as queer-friendly hotels and establishments. The pricing primarily focused on food and drinks, and the final score reflects how well-rounded the destinations are for tourism.
Here are the Top 5 cities welcoming LGBTQ+ Vacationers:

1. Top Pick: Porto, Portugal
- Gay Travel Index: 12
- Safety Index: 67/100
- LGBTQ hotels: 53
- LGBTQ clubs & pubs: 8
- Average dinner price: $11.6
- Nightlife closing time: 6 AM
- Final Score: 74/100
Porto leads the list, uniting affordability, safety, and a large variety of entertainment. High safety and good living conditions for queer people earned Portugal an index of 12, which puts it in fourth place in the world. There are also 53 LGBTQ+-friendly hotels in the city, and 8 bars and clubs where queer people are the main clientele. The night out costs are the second-lowest on the list, following only San Jose, and nighttime fun lasts until morning, with most establishments closing doors at 6 AM.

2. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon follows closely, as another Portuguese city on the list. It stands out with even better safety than Porto, and it has over 120 queer-friendly hotels within the city limits. The LGBTQ+-oriented nighttime entertainment is also almost three times bigger than in Porto, but the prices are expectedly higher, too.

3. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona ranks third, with a similar number of queer-friendly accommodations, but an even larger nightlife scene. There are 35 queer bars and clubs in the area, trailing behind only Madrid and Berlin. The prices here sit in a medium range, with a dinner costing around $17.45 and an additional $4.65 for a drink. Just as in Lisbon, tourists can enjoy a sunny summer here, with temperatures averaging 19°C in June.

4. Paris, France
In fourth place is Paris, where tourists can find the most LGBTQ+-friendly accommodations in the world, with 441 hotels. In addition, queer tourists can visit 33 special bars and clubs, and enjoy meals for the same price as on the Iberian Peninsula. At the same time, alcohol is much pricier than in Spain or Portugal, with $8.15 for a stiff drink.

5. The Wild Card: San José, California, USA
San José is the fifth-best destination in the world for LGBTQ+ tourists, with affordable prices and sunny weather, averaging 23°C in June. There are 20 bars and clubs in the city that advertise themselves as queer-friendly, and twice as many hotels of the same kind. The safety here is also better than in Paris, and tourists can explore nightlife until 2-3 AM.
Drew Renna, Head of Brand and Creators of Hidden, commented on the study: “Portugal and Spain consistently sitting at the top of these rankings isn’t just about legislation, though both countries score well there. Legal protection doesn’t always equal feeling safe, and there are countries where same-sex relationships are technically legal but queer travelers feel deeply unwelcome the moment they arrive.
“What makes Porto and Lisbon genuinely stand out is that the safety extends beyond what’s written in law into how people are actually treated day to day. That combination of legal security and social warmth is genuinely rare, and it’s what keeps these cities at the top year after year.”
