Travel-Related Highlights of the GLAAD Media Awards Nominations

As our community continues to strive towards equality worldwide, organizations such as GLAAD are there for us to do the heavy lifting and to hold people accountable. GLAAD, of course, is the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization and they have recently announced the nominees for their 34th Annual Media Awards.

The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. Since 1990, the GLAAD Media Awards have grown to be the most visible annual LGBTQ awards show in the world, sending powerful messages of acceptance to audiences globally. To announce this year’s nominees the organization enlisted the help of RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Salina EsTitties and Sasha Colby, who created a ‘GLAAD Drag Story Time’ video to make the exciting announcements.

Although without a category of its own, travel-related media has been spotlighted this year for recognition, with nominees including people and stories we have covered right here on Vacationer.

First and foremost, The Lesbian Bar Project is being recognized with one of five Special Recognition Awards which are given to honor projects and individuals that worked to spotlight diverse segments of the LGBTQ community in innovative ways during 2022. The Lesbian Bar Project, as they originally revealed to us back in August, continued their amazing work of bringing awareness to the few remaining lesbian bars left in the United States by producing a three-part docuseries to complement their groundbreaking short film which first brought attention to the topic.

As for the categorical awards, Trixie Motel was nominated for Outstanding Reality Program (Non- Competitive). The show, which aired on Discovery+, chronicled Trixie Mattel and her partner David’s journey through the renovation of a rundown motel property in Palm Springs. The show, besides being endlessly entertaining, also served as a travel guide to Palm Springs since Trixie was often seen looking for furniture and artwork around the city and meeting her friends/ collaborators at various spaces to discuss the progress of the renovation.

HBO Max’s We’re Here was also nominated for Outstanding Reality Program (Non-Competitive). Starring Bob the Drag Queen, Shangela and Vacationer’s December cover star Eureka O’Hara, this show follows these three beloved drag queens as they canvas smaller and traditionally less liberal cities around the US where they give local residents a makeover for a one-night-only drag show.

Other shows that were acknowledged that have inspired our wanderlust were:  The White Lotus, nominated for Outstanding Limited Series, and Queer As Folk, nominated for Outstanding New TV Series.

The 34th Annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will take place in Los Angeles on March 30, 2023, and in New York City on May 13, 2023. For a full list of nominees click here.
